Music is a complex yet simple thing. We all listen to music, but we never think about why we listen to it. Music can be a source of comfort or even motivation. I listen to music for all of these reasons. The songs I listen to have lyrics that are very relatable and things that the average person would see or experience in their everyday life. Music is very similar to books because you always get a message out of it, and it leaves you thinking. Books are pretty much lyrics without the sound.
The music I listen to has variated from year to year. When I was young I listened to a lot of Alternative / rock music because of the game “Rock Band”. I found most of my music from there and it definitely made me expand my music choices and find new bands to listen to. My favorite bands are Avenged Sevenfold and Rise Against. Both of those bands have a very distinct sound and voices are very catchy. They both have the similar Alternative/rock sound. The band “Rise Against” has a very rebellious message and speak about the world’s problems and how no one is fixing them. They are known as a revolutionary band to some people because of this. The band “Avenged Sevenfold” has a very dark vibe. Most of the music is about Life’s problems and emotions in metaphors. I listened to this music because it helped me get through my days depending whether my mood was happy or sad, they always had a song to go with my mood. Whether I’m sad or depressed or I’m happy and excited, they always have a song for me to listen to.
When I got into high school, I started listening to more Hip/Hop and Rap. The first rapper that I ever listened to was Eminem. When I listened to Eminem, I was amazed. The way his lyrics were so perfect and went so well with the beat was unbelievable. He also told a story in every one of his songs; and it was basically like watching a movie. He instantly became my favorite rapper. After listening to all of his albums from his first mixtape to Recovery; I became a big fan! All of Eminem’s songs connected to me because they were all so relatable. Most of his songs are about the struggles he has went through in his life and how he overcomes it. It gives the listener a lot of motivation because if he could do it, you could do it too. A good example is the song “Lose Yourself” the song starts off with him talking about how he’s really nervous about the freestyle battle he’s performing and he does terrible in front of the crowd and gets booed off stage, he then describes how someone should never give up and ends up getting famous after hitting rock bottom. I connected to this because I’ve went through struggles in my life too, but I’ve always find motivation to pick myself back up.
In conclusion, the evolution of me listening to certain music has changed and will keep changing. Depending on what kind of mood I’m in, it will help me keep finding new music and different genres as I get older.
