Op/Ed blogging – Blog #6 – Extra Credit – Monday

The NFC / AFC Championships happened this weekend and a lot of surprises came in it. The NFC Championship game was the 49ers vs the Falcons. The Falcons started off the came strong, on the opening drive, Matt Ryan, Quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons threw a 56 yard pass to Julio Jones to start the game out with a THUD! They then finished the half scoring 24 points to only the 49ers scoring 7. The second half results were completely different! The 49ers looked unstoppable the second half of the game scoring over 21 unanswered points and the defense stopped Matt Ryan on every drive. They looked like Superbowl champions the way they finished the game and deserved to be in the Superbowl. The AFC Championship game was the biggest surprise, the 9.5 point favorites ‘New England Patriots” came into this game expecting to blowout the Ravens, this went the opposite way, the Ravens dominated this game from the beginning to the end, shutting down the NFL’s #1 offense to only 13 points. They have now beat Andrew Luck, Peyton Manning, and Tom Brady to get into the Superbowl!

I was also very surprised about these games. I expected the Patriots to easily beat the Ravens, but they proved me wrong. They played with their heart and soul and looked like they were there for a reason. They stunned the patriots croud with their defense dominance! The NFC game went more like I expected, I expected the 49ers to finish the Falcons because of their defensive dominance, and that is just what they did. My prediction in the superbowl is that the Ravens will beat the 49ers giving Ray Lewis his last ring to retire with. They play with so much heart and soul, that it would prove me wrong to bet against them again! I Believe they proved they are good enough to win the Superbowl!

I believe English in the 21st Century is all “modern-day” ways of communication. It ranges from Social Media websites like Facebook and Twitter to Reality Shows like Teen Mom and Man vs. Wild. Things we do every-day like reading magazines to getting the daily newspaper is also modern day English. Our lifestyles are all based on modern-day English from the moment we wake up, to the moment we fall asleep; we are in some way participating in English in the 21st Century. Our need for understanding communication today is vital. The ways of communication have deeply changed from the ways it used to be, and is now overwhelmed with Text Messages, Social Media Websites, and Skype. Using these things are ways of understanding 21st English and the unique new ways of communication. It would definitely be hard to survive without these modern ways of communication and saves us an extreme amount of time. English has changed a lot from how it used to be. Back in the “old days” the only way of communicating was from writing letters, and the only way to exchange ideas to the public was to write books / columns in the newspaper. All things about past traditional English was documented through books. There is a huge difference to how it was then, and how it is now. Now we communicate and spread ideas in a lot different ways to how we used to!

Explanation of the 6 elements of communication -

1. Speaker – The speaker is the initiator of the communication. This is the person who creates the type of communication for the audience to understand. They are the ones who came up with the idea, and create a clear, understandable message. An example of a speaker is Stephen Lambert, who created the show Undercover Bosses.

2. Audience – The Audience is the group of people receiving the communication of the speaker. They are the ones listening and analyzing what the speaker is communicating. An example of an audience is us. When we are watching a TV show we are analyzing and understanding what is happening, and what is being communicated back and forth!

3. Content –  The Content is the information that is being told in the form of communication. It is the in depth ideas of the communicator and is leaving the audience to have a understanding of the communication. An example of content is the harsh survival conditions of the rain forest that Bear Grylllz is teaching you to survive in, in the show Man vs. Wild.

4. Media – Media is the genre of the information that is being communicated. Different types of information can be put into different genres that can be understood in different ways. An example of Media is that the show “Under-Cover Boss” is a real-life drama genre!

5. Occasion – Occasion is why or when was the information created for this form of communication. This explains the history or why the type of communication began. An example of this is the “Funny Face Prank” video by Ed Bassmaster was created on January 18th, 2009 and that’s a month after he created his YouTube Account.

6. Purpose – Purpose is the reason the information is being told by the communicator. The information was created for a specified reason and was made because of something or someone. An example of purpose is that in the “EdBassMaster” Funny Face video his purpose of making the video was to show the funny reactions of the store-workers and to get laughs and views and to show his cool prank he invented himself!

Units of Study:

1. Blogging –  This applies to English in the 21st century because we our sharing our thoughts and ideas. When writing our blogs, we are using our ideas to communicate to the reader our opinions on certain topics. This is 21st Century English because we are communicating to the audience our personal ideas / opinions on whatever we feel like writing at the time. This is almost the same thing as writing a book, but in a different way because it’s usually not in that form, but more of an every day to day information type of form!

2.  Music – This applies to English in the 21st century because music is another form of a literature. Music is the specific form of writing that is made to share ideas on topics. It is made poetically to send listeners a specific message, and to gain something out of it. This is another huge form of communication because all most everyone in the world listens to music but most of them don’t understand that it is almost like reading an article, because you are hearing a message ,interpreting it, and then understanding it , which fits in to the idea of 21st English.

3. Reality TV – This is a form of 21st Century English because of the real-life scenarios. It is simulating and showing real people doing things that an everyday person could be doing, and creating it into a TV show that isn’t acting. Meaning this is all actually happening and the things in the show are all real. We are gaining knowledge from watching this because we are analyzing all the different things happening and are watching different things people are doing in real life. This is 21st English because we are gaining a message from it, and gaining ideas from watching the certain shows and how they are!

Op/Ed blogging – Blog #5 – Friday

The NBA All-Star voting lineups has just been yesterday and there’s been much controversy on who and who shouldn’t have made it. For the East the starting point guard is the Boston Celtics “Rajon Rondo” who received 924,000 votes. He’s averaged over 11 assists a game which is by far leading the league. The starting forward for the east is reigning MVP “Lebron James” who received the 3rd most votes out of all players. The biggest controversial player in the east was “Kevin Garnett” who has been having a mediocre year in his standards and hasn’t produced all star numbers. There is many people who are mad that he’s starting and think there should be a replacement for him. In the west the starting point-guard is Chris Paul who recieved over a million votes and has played like an all-star all year leading the Clippers to the best record in the NBA. Kobe Bryant and Kevin Durant received the most votes in the entire all-star class and deserved to be, both are the top 2 scorers in the NBA. Another Controversial player in the west was Dwight Howard, who hasn’t been too outstanding for the Lakers, and received over 900,000 votes. But the most controversial player who made the All-Star squad was Jeremy Lin. The Sensation of the NBA last year who had a span of 20 games where he produced all-star numbers, has mostly faded away. He’s only averaged 11 points a game and 5 assists as a point guard and mostly got all the votes from his extremely large fan base. Jeremy Lin even admitted himself he didn’t deserve to be an All-Star in 2013.

I think the NBA All-Star game is mostly a popularity contest and Jeremy Lin getting in proved it. The most well known / liked players always get voted in every year even though their stats show they don’t deserve to be playing in it. Kevin Garnett who’s one of my favorite players of all time; didn’t deserve to be in the All-Star game this year, he simply got put in because of his past stats / accomplishments and it aggrivates me because there’s so many unrecognized players that should have been voted in instead of him. Dwight Howard is another play that is way overrated this year and people also voted him because of his popularity .The Lakers are currently below .500 record and might not even make the playoffs this year and Dwight Howard is one of the problems. Him and Kobe are not playing well together and he’s still recovering from his past injuries, which means he shouldn’t have been voted in. But the worst one voted in at all, his Jeremy Lin. His huge fan base is the only reason he’s an all-star this year and shouldn’t have been put in the game. He has a terrible turn-over ratio this year and his stats have been below average for a starting point-guard. So many people voted for him because of the great games he had last season and he’s no where close to producing those numbers this year, his teammate James Harden I believe should be in there instead of him, who’s carried the Houston Rockets to 21 Wins.

Manti’ Teo, the Middle Linebacker for Notre Dame College who was a runner-up in the heisman, and lead his team to an undeafeted regular season, was just found to be in the biggest hoax in sports history. Many College Football fans heard the story that his Grandma and “Girlfriend” died the same week,  and he still played through all this greif, and he was one of the most well respected college players in the game.  Yesterday, a news story came out that Manti Teo’s girlfriend never existed and he faked that she died to get more sympathy and heisman Votes. In post game interviews he always said he did it for his girlfriend and how much he loved her, but now everyone finds out he w as lieing. He was going to be a top 10 pick in the NFL Draft, but now many teams will most likely pass on him for this, and it will greatly hurt his draft stock. The Media also recently found out that his “girlfriends” pictures were fakes off someone elses profile pictures, and it was confirmed by the girl who’s pictures it was, who lived in California. This will hurt the Notre Dame Organization a lot, because right now they our backing him up, when he’s already been found guility.

When I read this article, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I watched so many Notre Dame games cheering for Manti Teo and I loved watching him play. I now I found out that he lied about his girlfriend dieing to get heisman votes and sympathy? That’s one of the lowest thing you can do and he should be ashamed. I don’t even think he should get drafted by a team, because if I was a GM, I would not take a person who does this type of stuff, especially something that low. Even if he wasn’t taken in the 7th round, I still wouldn’t pick him. Many of the College Fans are in disbelief that he would ever do something like that and many are in denial that it is a lie. But reports confirmed this was true. Now I’m very glad Johny Manziel won heisman instead of Manti Teo because I believe this is karma for what he did. He should be ashamed for his actions, and apologize to the public for such a horrible hoax he pulled, he was looked up to by so many and now this is his new public image.

The Minnesota Vikings finished 2012 with an extremely successful season despite having the 2nd to worst record (3-13) and improved to 10-6, with a playoff birth! There were many positive moments from a season a lot of people thought we would be terrible, but the vikings had a lot to prove! Even after this successful season, there were still many areas on improve on including adding a #1 reciever to compliment harvin and to be a down-field threat, a solid Middle-Linebacker to cover the middle of the field, and to run-stop, a shut-down corner to replace the aging Antoine Winfield, who is retiring soon, and a few solid Run-Blocking offensive guards to block for the best Running Back in the NFL. The Vikings still are a few pieces short of a superbowl win, but if we have another succesful draft like last year, you cannot count the Vikings out. Vikings currently are the second-youngest team in the NFL, so there’s only a way up from here. They rookies will only get more experience, and will play even better than they have, and AP will be solid, like he is every-year.

I believe the Vikings are going to be a super-bowl contender next year if we fix our biggest problem; we have no wide recievers. Outside of Percy Harvin, our best reciever is the inconsistent Jerome Simpson who had no touchdowns the whole year. We don’t have one down-field threat to stretch the defense out on our whole team. If we got a wide reciver with those abilities, it would also help Adrian Peterson because the safeties would have to play in the back-field instead of lining up in the box to stop an Adrian Peterson run. We also need some more defensive backs to help our secondary. Our 2012 secondary, which was much improved from our 2011 one who gave up the most touchdowns in the NFL, still could get better. I agree that we need a shut-down corner to cover the great wide recivers in our division we have to play twice a year, including Megatron, Brandon Marshal, and Jordy Nelson. These recievers are all very dominant and always find a way to get open. A position I feel we need that was not included in the article is another dominant defense tackle to help Kevin Williams. Kevin Williams is constantly getting double-teamed, so if we got another dominant defense tackle, it would help our run game even more and make the defense not be able to double team Kevin Williams. If we fix all these problems in the draft and free angency, I believe the Minnesota Vikings will be the 2014 Superbowl Champions next year!

Op/Ed blogging – Blog #2 – Tuesday

During this NBA Season there has been many teams doing very well and some doing very bad. The teams who are currently having the worst season are The Charlotte Bobcats, Washington Wizards and the New Orleans Hornets. Being the teams as the worst in the league, they are looked down upon as failures. But there are some very interesting stats about these teams that I find very surprising. First, the Washington Wizards have the 10th best defense in the league. They are currently the worst team (Record wise) and the league and their defense is actually currently better than the NBA Champions the “Miami Heat.” The Bobcats who won a whopping 7 games last year, are still doing terrible, but are still better than last year. But currently the Bobcats are second in the league in points per play in the pick and roll, this is very surprising seeing that they were on a 14 game losing streak. Last, Austin Rivers the 1st round draft pick out of duke, has had the worst statistical season ever, having a WARP rating as the worst since 1970, which is definitely letting down for his team who has a lot of young talent.

I find these statistics very odd because who would have thought these terrible teams, could be leading the league in certain areas, but have such terrible records? A team like the Washington Wizards having a better defense then the unstoppable Miami Heat is really crazy. I also found that the bob-cats are the best pick and roll team, when they have trouble even winning a game, wouldn’t this make your offense way better? Last, the Overhyped Austin Rivers on having the worst WARP (Wins above replacement player) rating since 1970) I can see why. He takes so many terrible shots and doesn’t play defense. The star at Duke the year before definitely left College too early and wasn’t “NBA Material” just yet. I’m not saying that he’s going to be a terrible NBA player, but this season proves he just wasn’t ready and should have stayed in the college. He just isn’t ready for the Pro’s yet. All these terrible teams still have very interesting stats about them that any NBA fan would find very interesting, (including me).
